Pool Safety - Be Safe and Enjoy Your Day in the Sun!

Updated: Nov 25, 2023

Here in the land of sunshine, many people own pools. How often do they think of pool safety? There are some things you can do to protect yourself and loved ones.

Here are some recommended items to install, to help you stay safe and prevent accidents.

Fencing:

  • Pools must be enclosed by a fence or barrier that is at least 60 inches in height.

  • The fence should not have gaps or openings that a young child could crawl through or under.

Gates:

  • Gates should be self-closing and self-latching.

  • The latch should be located out of a child's reach.

Alarms:

  • Residential pools are required to have at least one safety feature, which may include an alarm that sounds when someone enters the pool area.

Anti-Entrapment Devices:

  • Pools with single main drains must be equipped with an anti-entrapment device.

Pool Covers:

  • Power safety covers that meet specific standards are an acceptable alternative to fencing.

CPR Signage:

  • Signs indicating the location of safety equipment, including a shepherd's hook and a ring buoy, and instructions on how to perform CPR must be posted.

Pool Drains:

  • Pools must comply with federal and state regulations regarding pool drain safety.

Please be aware that these are general guidelines, and there may be additional requirements or changes to the regulations. It is crucial to check with local building departments or authorities to get the most up-to-date information on pool safety regulations in California. Additionally, if you're constructing a new pool or modifying an existing one, you may need to obtain the necessary permits and comply with the latest building codes.
